From Karl's cubicle
WASHINGTON - The year was 1972. The president was Richard
Nixon. The World had not yet heard of "Watergate."

Yet Dick Nixon may have had a premonition that a "Deep Throat"
release would betray him, prematurely.
This Linda Lovelace opus, which was banned at the time in 23 states,
only cost $25,000 to make in just six days, and has allegedly
grossed more than $600 million for popularizing an oral sexual
taboo. But the Nixon administration was not amused, sending in the
FBI to close down screenings, and taking legal action against the
film's director, Jerry Damiano, and stars.
Now, 33 years after "tricky Dick," and 5 years after Bill and
Monica, "Deep Throat" is being re-released in theaters as a new
generation of lawmakers wage a renewed assault on getting dirty with
Dick.
