Heroin Joy

True Stories by Paddy MeGoolies

When I was growing up I had a friend called Stephen, his younger brother John and his friend David took the wrong path in life and before they were out of their teens they had got into all sorts trouble from stealing cars, joyriding, breaking and entering to drug dealing.

Joyriding in stolen cars

Both of them were arrested several times and were facing several years behind bars. David ran off to England and there he eventually got into financial trouble with drug dealers and was found hanging in his bed sit, I do feel a bit sad for him when I think of his life but he did choose it himself, he was in my class in school.

John stayed in Ireland to face his crimes and was sent to Mount Joy Prison here in Dublin, he was given seven years. Mount Joy prison is known in Ireland as ‘The Joy’. I met John in a pub several years ago, he was on remand and he told me he was going into ‘The Joy’ soon and he had made the decision to do his time and get himself straight and eventually have a life for himself.

Since John’s incarceration he has become a Heroin addict and I found out recently from some old school mates that John is now HIV positive! Wow I guess crime really doesn’t pay!

The shocking truth is that John became an addict and contracted Aids from sharing contaminated needles in Prison! He wasn’t a drug user outside prison. John is the second person that I know who has gone into the ‘Joy’ clean and become a user.

For some reason this problem of drugs in ‘The Joy’ has been brought to light many many times but nothing has been done? The government sits on their thumbs; maybe hoping it will go away? Or maybe they let it go on to keep the prison folk happy and quiet? The prison Governor John Lonergan has never publicly given any solution to the problem and has never offered his resignation, after all he is a public servant who’s doing a shit job, shouldn’t he be replaced with someone who can do the job? You may have read a previous report I wrote about a politician who was fired for smoking a cigarette in a government imposed no smoking zone. Now that’s justice eh? Why am I paying high taxes for this kind of crap public service?

He’s happy but is my friend’s brother happy?
